Background.
Born into poverty in the slums, orphaned at a young age, and subjected to the tribal discrimination faced by the paripus, Basilio grew up on the lowest, harshest rung of Euchronian society. With every day a struggle to survive, Basilio came to depend wholly on his older brother Fidelio, and as the two grew older Basilio became the brawn to Fidelio's brain.
To provide for them, Basilio eventually tried to enlist in the State Army, but was too young. Instead, he signed up for igniter experiments, his brother joining him. Only after they signed up it became clear paripus were experimented on until they dropped dead, and held in poor living conditions living on slave wages. Given Basilio's physical strength, he was tested on more than others, and it was when Basilio was on the brink of death that Fidelio took him and finally escaped. His life was saved at a church by a Sanctist healer named Rella.
The two were left with both permanent scars, both physical and mental: Fidelio's growth was permanently stunted, while Basilio was left with chronic chest pain he has to manage with painkilling herbs and insomnia he manages with tea, as well as a sharpened sense of taste that makes it difficult for him to eat unless the food is extremely tasty. Basilio began to learn to cook to provide for himself as a consequence.
The brothers eventually enlisted in the State Army, eventually joining the ranks of Count Louis Guiabern, who accepted all tribes into his ranks, Fidelio in particular proving himself with his brilliant mind on the battlefield even despite the many obstacles faced by paripus. Fidelio admired Louis's so-called meritocratic ideals that put strength above all else, and which under his 'might makes right' philosophy, would create a world where the weak are dominated by the strong, rather than by a tribal hierarchy. Like he always had, Basilio followed his brother and so also came to believe in Louis.
By the time Louis has slain the king and declared himself rightful candidate to be the king's successor, they're both unswervingly loyal to the autocrat's cause, serving as his right-hand men and often can be seen accompanying him as bodyguards.
Personality.
Outwardly fierce and cold to those he distrusts, Basilio knows how to project an intimidating image of strength, and in battle, he can be swift and brutal. Getting to know him and have him lower his guard even slightly, though, reveals that under the serious-looking exterior is a friendly and even cheerful young man who's happy to chat and socialise with others. While he's very protective of his older brother, his playful nature means he often likes to tease and rib him too, much to Fidelio's embarassment.
Although far from unintelligent, Basilio tends to leave the thinking to his older brother, while Basilio prefers to act. Unlike Fidelio's calculating and guarded nature, Basilio tends to wear his heart on his sleeve and voice his thoughts, whether he's happy or unhappy. He's capable of strategic planning, given his military background, and also possesses a striking level of emotional intelligence. He tends to trust his intuition and is good at split-second decisions, which has gotten him and Fidelio out of a number of difficult situations.
The brothers tend to see those close to them as 'family', by circumstance if not by blood, such as one of the other paripus who survived the igniter experiments, Vinca. They're also close to the songstress, Junah, who they both care for and respect, with Basilio well aware of Fidelio's crush on her. For Basilio's part, he's been in love with 'Saint' Rella ever since she healed him, though he's never confessed this -- thanks at least in part to his lord's sworn hatred of the Sanctist Church.
Although illiterate until he joined Louis's ranks, Basilio's been teaching himself to read and write, and now has some ability. Similarly, he can sometimes struggle to articulate himself in speech due to his lack of education, and can grow frustrated with himself as a consequence. Because of his dependency on his brother, he's also prone to indecision when left on his own, and tends to rely on others to tell him what to do, even if he doesn't always agree with their decisions.
Basilio is a skilled illustrator, and likes to particularly draw animals, people and food. He loves cooking for himself and for others, and learned to make a whole range of desserts and baked goods to suit his brother's sweet tooth.
